Joe Eastwood was part of the wining team for the 2020 Euspen Talent Programme. The task was to design an alignment platform for the 160,000 accelerating cylinders of a new 50km particle accelerator for CERN. The cylinders must be aligned to within 17µm over a 200 m sliding cylinder over the entire length of the accelerator. There were many constraints that made this problem difficult including limited materials, design for mass production, and the only two weeks we were given to complete the task.
