Centre for Doctoral Training in Ultra Precision Engineering

Biography

Paul Shore leads NPL's Engineering Measurement (EM) Division, with over 100 scientists, consultants, guest workers and apprentices. The Division covers NPL's Temperature, Humidity, Mass, Dimensional and Engineering Measurement research and services.

In 2013, the Temperature team published the results of the world's most accurate temperature measurement, as part of the Boltzmann constant redetermination, and its applied thermometry work develops measurements in production environments, healthcare and energy generation. The Mass & Dimensional Group realises the fundamental units of length and mass, and solves a wide range of industrial problems. Nano-dimensional measurements support high-value industries, while, at the other end of the scale, in-situ measurements of large-scale assemblies support advanced manufacturing, aerospace, space and big science. NPL's Engineering Measurement Services Group provides over 2,000 traceable calibrations every year to the highest achievable level.

Professor Shore joined NPL in June 2015 from Cranfield University, where he is McKeown Professor of Ultra Precision Technologies and Head of the Cranfield University Precision Engineering Institute. Paul was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2009, and from 2011 to 2013 was the President of the European Society of Precision Engineering and Nanotechnology.

Prior to his time in academia, Paul worked in business, developing and implementing strategic programmes within an international engineering company, defining and implementing precision production systems across the world. Paul is also active in the Watch it Made programme that enthuses young people about Engineering through manufacturing their own quality watch using tailored advanced manufacturing systems.
