Centre for Doctoral Training in Ultra Precision Engineering

Biography

Joe completed a MEng in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nottingham in 2018, obtaining a first class mark and finishing in the top 10% of the cohort. He completed a project with Haydale Composite Solutions in which a new machine for the safe mixing polymer granules with carbon nanoplatelets was designed, developed and built.

The following summer he worked as a research intern with the Horizon Digital Economy Research Institute, studying human mobility patterns via big data collected through the University’s Wi-Fi infrastructure. For this work he was awarded the best poster prize at the 2017 Transport Technologies Showcase conference.

For his master’s project, Joe worked within the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre, Gas Turbine and Transmissions Research Centre. Here he studied hydrodynamic optimisation of a jet engine oil scoop used for bearing lubrication. This was achieved via a fluid simulation code developed in house based on Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics. For this work he was awarded the Henry Power Prize for Numerical Methods. The centre then employed him over the following summer to work toward publishing this work.

Joe is now a member of the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Research Group, studying for a PhD with the CDT in Ultra Precision Engineering. His project is in the in-situ thermal measurement and control of the high speed sintering additive manufacturing process, and is partially funded by Xaar 3D ltd.
