Ashley graduated from his BEng degree in 2014, which he studied part-time with the Open University while working as a care worker. Just before graduating he began working as a design engineer in a company that manufactures refrigeration equipment. Ashley also worked as a quality engineer in a company that produces agricultural equipment, prior to joining the Centre for Doctoral Training in Ultra Precision at Cranfield in September 2016.
