Laser Precision Microfabrication Conference

The CDT-UP MRes cohort attended the 2018 International Symposium on Laser Precision Microfabrication (LPM) from 25-28 June in Edinburgh, Scotland. The event was hosted by the Association of Industrial Laser Users (AILU) at Heriot-Watt University.

Over 100 speakers gave 20-30 minute presentations on the most advanced developments and latest trends in laser application for precision fabrication, from biomedical uses to nuclear programmes. The talks were accompanied by poster sessions, exhibitions and free discussions.

Being held in Japan every other year, the symposium was brought to the UK for the first time. Attended by hundreds of experts, professionals and students alike, the event created a unique and valuable opportunity for industry, research and academia to exchange ideas and form collaborations. The integration between specialists in fundamental laser-matter interaction theories, laser material processing, manufacturers and end users was exciting and productive, both in terms of forming deeper understanding of laser knowledge and exploring the potential of future laser market. The event was also blessed by the heart-warming Scottish summer weather.
