Centre for Doctoral Training in Ultra Precision Engineering

Biography

Sam has returned to the Institute for Manufacturing in October 2014 to undertake a PhD as part of the Industrial Photonics group. The basis of this research will be to develop the SprayLaze technology (laser assisted cold spray) and investigate novel uses and materials.

Sam graduated from the University of Cambridge with an M.Eng. in Manufacturing Engineering in 2012. After graduating, he spent 4 months working at FTI Consulting in London, as a Research Analyst in the Economics and Financial Consultancy department, before returning to engineering with the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) in Coventry. In just over a year at the MTC, Sam gained experience of several different additive manufacturing technologies, including SLM, FDM, SLA and laser cladding, but predominantly in the use of EBM for aerospace and medical component manufacture. He also developed an interest in design for additive manufacturing, particularly the available software for component design and topological optimisation.
