Elkin Lopez-Fontal

Elkin Lopez-Fontal

MRes Student, 2016

University of Cambridge

Biography:

Elkin studied chemical engineering at the National University of Colombia where he also obtained an MSc in Automatic process control. He obtained an MSc in analytical chemistry at Birkbeck, University of London, under the supervision of Dr Salvador Tomas where he was working on the development of systems that mimic interactions between in-membrane and in-solution molecules. Particularly exploring the potential of the optical and self-assembly properties of metalloporphyrins in compartmentalised systems. He was recently awarded an MPhil in Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry, University of Cambridge where he worked on a research project about organic synthesis and supramolecular chemistry that focused on the study of molecular recognition and self-assembly characteristics between hydrogen bonding molecules.

Research interest: The use of laser systems in:

  • Composites
  • Micromachining
  • Biological sensors.
  • Coatings.
  • Imaging.
  • New alloys.

In his leisure time, Elkin is on the track hiking or in the kitchen baking.
